Your Friendly Guide to a Successful Start

Joining a farmers market for the first time is exciting—and maybe even a little intimidating! At Sunny’s Kitchen Delights, we recently had our first experience as vendors at the Zoo Miami Farmers Market, and we learned a lot. Whether you’re selling jams, breads, crafts, or produce, here are some helpful tips to make your debut smooth, fun, and successful:

1. Do Your Homework

Before the big day, research the market.

  • What are the setup and teardown hours?
  • What equipment is allowed or provided?
  • Is electricity or water available?
  • Are there rules about packaging or labeling (especially for cottage food businesses)?

Every market has its own personality—knowing the details ahead of time helps you prepare confidently.

2. Bring a Professional Setup

Presentation matters!
Invest in:

  • A clean, sturdy tent with weights
  • A folding table with tablecloths (neutral or on-brand colors work best)
  • Clear signage with your logo, pricing, and product info
  • Samples or testers (if permitted)

Don’t forget a comfy chair, water, and maybe a small fan if it’s a hot day!

3. Be Product-Ready

Prepare enough inventory, but don’t overdo it your first time.
At our debut, we brought:

  • 200 jars of jam
  • 30 protein breads
  • 400 almond bombs

Scale based on your expectations and how large the market is. Always label products clearly and keep extra supplies (change, shopping bags, ingredient lists) nearby.

4. Make Payments Easy

Many customers expect to pay with cards or apps.

  • Accept cash and have change
  • Offer Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App
  • Use a card reader like Square or PayPal Zettle if possible

Displaying a sign with accepted payment options boosts buyer confidence.

5. Tell Your Story

Customers love to connect with local makers. Share:

  • How you got started
  • What inspires your products
  • Your values (like being family-owned or using local ingredients)

People often come back because they love you as much as your product.

6. Engage With Customers

Smile, say hello, and be open to questions! Offer tastings if allowed—it’s one of the best ways to win hearts (and repeat buyers). Have a signup sheet or QR code for your mailing list or social media.

7. Prepare for the Weather

Check the forecast the night before. Bring:

  • Sunscreen and hats
  • Rain protection (tarps, ponchos, waterproof bins)
  • Ice packs or coolers for perishable items

Heat advisories are real—hydrate and pace yourself.

8. Network With Other Vendors

Introduce yourself to your neighbors! Many seasoned vendors are happy to share tips. Collaborations, referrals, and friendships often start at your booth’s edge.

9. Promote Before and After

  • Post your participation on social media ahead of time
  • Tag the market and use local hashtags
  • After the event, share photos and thank your customers

Let your followers know where to find you next, or how to order online.

10. Take Notes and Reflect

At the end of the day, jot down:

  • What sold well (and what didn’t)
  • Customer feedback
  • Any supplies you forgot
  • Ideas for improvement

Every market is a learning experience—and you’ll only get better!

Final Thought
Joining a farmers market is more than just selling—it’s about connecting, learning, and growing. At Sunny’s Kitchen Delights, we’ve embraced the journey and can’t wait to return for more market days. We hope these tips help you feel empowered to take your booth to the next level!

We had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Zoo Miami Farmers Market, and what a rewarding experience it was! It was our very first time joining as vendors, and as a small, family-owned cottage business, we were equally excited and nervous.

In preparation, we produced 200 jars of jam, 30 breads, and 400 almond bombs—a true labor of love. On the first day of the market, we arrived bright and early to set up our tent and display our products. Having only ever attended farmers markets as customers, stepping into the vendor role was a whole new adventure. That first day became our learning day—we observed how other vendors organized their booths, engaged with customers, and presented their products. It was fascinating and inspiring.

Despite the heat advisory that weekend, we had a steady flow of interest and solid sales. I even thought ahead and brought Pedialyte to help us stay hydrated during the intense heat. As the day progressed, we connected with other vendors, exchanged contacts, and even received additional orders, which we fulfilled between Saturday and Sunday after the market wrapped up.

On Sunday, things got even more exciting. We learned that you don’t have to commit to both days—participation is flexible—but we were glad we stayed. Sunday brought new neighbors, more customers, and valuable insight. One key change we made was offering samples of our jams, and that made a huge difference! Customers loved trying the flavors, and our sales exceeded those of Saturday.

Even during the slower season and under challenging weather conditions, we had a successful weekend. We’re already looking forward to returning in September—this market gave us energy, joy, and plenty of ideas to grow.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to support us—we truly loved every moment of it! 💛

My Journey to Health Through Salads.

As a seasoned Software Engineer with over 20 years of experience, I decided to make a significant change in my life in 2012. Struggling with health issues and weight gain, I took a personal, doctor-free initiative to transform my eating habits.

I transitioned from consuming red meat to incorporating fresh, vibrant salads into my daily diet. Initially, salads were a mere side dish, but over time, they evolved into the centerpiece of my lunch. Chicken and seafood became my primary sources of animal protein, but gradually, even chicken took a back seat.

Exploring plant-based options like tofu and jackfruit opened up new culinary horizons for me. These alternatives not only satisfied my palate but also proved to be gentle on my stomach. While I’ve embraced many plant-based foods, my love for seafood remains unwavering. Salmon, tuna, and shrimp are my culinary passions, providing both nourishment and joy.

This journey, driven by a desire for better health and personal well-being, has reshaped my relationship with food. Salads and seafood are now the stars of my plate, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
